From Clinical Research to Publication
Specifically for MDs involved in Breast Cancer Clinical Research, a Joint Workshop Offered Exclusively by John Hopkins Medicines International and Innovara, Inc.
by Innovara

Overview:
A medical paper is a major disclosure of original research, a case study, clinical finding or other work that conveys a key learning and advances knowledge in the particular field of medicine in some way. Medical papers should be sufficiently detailed and with sound data and information so that peers in the medical community are able to evaluate and learn from such work and if interested, are able to replicate or build upon the research.

From Clinical Research to Publication ("CRP") is an intensive, yet thoroughly enjoyable, practical workshop for medical professionals, which explores how to create an appropriate publication based upon the type of research that has been done. In addition, the program addresses decisions that must be made prior to comencing research, such as which form of research to do and types of publications most appropriate for such research. It gives important insights on how to create and submit an abstract, and also gives hands-on practice on to prepare and present a Poster.

From Clinical Research to Publication is lead by a highly acclaimed and published professor or chief of the department from Johns Hopkins University, also possibly in the medical area of interest to the physicians who will attend the training. In addition, Johns Hopkins faculty has editorial experience for a leading journal (possibly in the same field of interest as the physicians) and also serves as a reviewer for leading publications. Guest faculty also may include leading physicians from the country or other countries. hosting institution or area with comparable experience in research and publishing, e.g. a breast cancer oncology specialist.

Program Details:
From Clinical Research to Publication™ is for faculty, fellows and other medical professionals engaged in breast cancer clinical research and who are interested to publish their work. The course begins with the starting point - before the research comences - with strategic decisions on which type of publication is desired and which would be the most appropriate publications to consider for such a paper.

The course then focuses on developing the skills and appreciate the hierarchy of clinical scientific evidence, beginning with the simple anecdotal observation and case studies through increasingly complicated research, and ultimately to prospective randomized controlled interventional trials. Using proprietary "engineered learning" techniques, physicians and researchers will work through each step of this scientific evidence hierarchy, learning how to write for publication starting with simple case studies, through to epidemiological studies, meta analyses, prospective controlled studies or prospective randomized controlled interventional trials.

MDs will be taught the structure of a scientific paper, the individual components of the paper, how to prepare a manuscript, and selecting the most appropriate journal to which to submit it. For example, some journals only publish primary work and will not consider derivative manuscripts. Other journal publish summaries, reviews, conference reports, meeting abstracts and commentaries on primary work. Knowing which journal will be most interested in specific types of publication should become part of one of the first decisions when doing research with publication as a desired endpoint.

Participants also learn about how the manuscript is processed, roles of the editors and manuscript reviewers and what they look for, including "red flags" that most likely result in a decision not to accept the manuscript. Prospective authors also learn how to deal with a rejected manuscript.

Other important up-to-date topics such as legitimacy/requirements of authorship, ethics, scientific misconduct, disclosure, and how to deal with a rejected manuscript also are reviewed.

Finally, there is a comprehensive session on Poster Preparation, from submitting the abstract through to design and presentation such as one might do at a major international conference. Actual examples of posters (both good and those needing improvement) are shown and critiqued by the group and by the faculty.

Faculty:
This program has been developed jointly by Johns Hopkins Medicines International, primarily by distinguished faculty member Dr. Paul Ladenson, Chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at JHMO and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, and by Barri M. Blauvelt, CEO of Innovara, Inc.. Instructors shall be Dr. Ted Tsangaris, Chief of Breast Cancer Surgery and Mrs. Blauvelt, who jointly lead the program. In addition, some sessions may be co-facilitated by local leading medical experts who are internationally well-published in leading medical journals and recognized nationally, regionall or globally.
